Wyrd Realms Festival is built by the community — and our volunteers are at the heart of the magic.

As a Realmkeeper, you’ll help bring the festival to life: guiding guests, supporting games, assisting with dragons and creatures, and keeping the realm running smoothly across the weekend. Whether you can give a few hours or a full day, every role helps shape the experience for thousands of adventurers.

No prior experience is required for most roles — just a friendly attitude, reliability, and a love of fantasy, games, and storytelling.

Dragon Wardens & Creature Support

Help bring our dragons and mystical creatures to life — safely, smoothly, and with maximum storybook wonder.

  • Creature appearances & crowd flow: guide guests into safe viewing areas, manage queues, and keep pathways clear during walk-throughs and photo moments

  • Family-friendly encounter support: help create calm, magical interactions (especially around children), and gently step in if a space gets too crowded

  • Dragon piloting support: assist with piloting and operating dragon costumes/puppets (where trained and assigned), including spotting, guiding, and supporting performers during movement and entrances

  • Spotter & safety roles: act as a dedicated “eyes-out” spotter for pilots/performers, watching for trip hazards, uneven ground, and guest proximity

  • Entrances/exits & backstage coordination: help with timing, marshalling, staging areas, and smooth transitions between appearances

  • Prop & presentation help: assist with small props, signage, and maintaining the “in-world” feel of each creature moment

  • Communication & escalation: report issues quickly to the Creature Lead (fatigue, overheating, costume repairs, crowd concerns)

(Training/briefing provided. Dragon piloting roles are allocated based on comfort level, physical ability, and safety requirements.)

Volunteer Expectations
To keep the realm welcoming, safe, and running smoothly, we ask all volunteers to:

  • Be friendly, respectful, and inclusive — greet guests warmly, help create a positive atmosphere, and support people of all ages, backgrounds, and experience levels.

  • Follow instructions from team leads — check in at the start of your shift, ask questions if you’re unsure, and stick to the plan so the whole festival stays coordinated.

  • Wear your volunteer identifier while on shift — tabard/lanyard/name tag helps guests find you quickly and lets staff know you’re on duty.

  • Commit to your scheduled shift where possible — arrive on time, let us know early if something changes, and make sure you hand over to the next volunteer before stepping away.

  • Help keep spaces safe and tidy — report hazards, manage small issues before they grow, and escalate anything serious to your lead immediately.
